Feedback widgets put customer testimonials or your satisfaction score on your own website. The widgets on a custom dashboard are a different feature. They chart feedback inside Simplesat.
How it works
Publishing comments on the Feedback page makes them testimonials. Each testimonial widget picks from them with its own filters. A score widget calculates its number from a survey's responses, with nothing to publish.
A widget pulls its content from Simplesat whenever the page it's on loads. The code you paste never needs to change. Anything you do in Simplesat, from publishing a comment to changing a widget's settings, reaches your website the next time someone opens the page.
Create a feedback widget
You'll need the Manage feedback widgets permission. Owners and Admins have it by default.
Go to Admin → Feedback widgets.
Click New feedback widget.
Pick a type. The widget opens for editing with default settings.
Type | What it shows |
Grid | Testimonial cards in rows, up to three across on desktop and one column on phones |
Masonry | Testimonial cards in staggered columns |
Carousel | One testimonial at a time, advancing on its own, with arrows to move between them |
Popup box | A small card in a corner of the page that cycles through testimonials |
Score | Your live satisfaction score |
Heads up: The stars or emoji at the top of a testimonial card come from the widget's icon setting and look the same on every card. They don't show the customer's rating. If that could mislead, switch the icon to quote marks.
Every plan includes unlimited feedback widgets, each with its own settings, filters and installation code.
Install a widget on your website
If someone else manages your website, send them the code and this section.
Go to Admin → Feedback widgets and click the pencil icon on the widget's row.
Click Get installation code, then Copy widget code.
Paste the code into the page where you want the widget, then publish the page.
The code has two parts:
<a href="https://simplesat.io" data-widget-id="your-widget-id"></a> <script id='simplesat-widget-script' src="…"></script>
The link marks where the widget goes, and its data-widget-id says which widget it is. The script loads the widget in the link's place. Both have to stay on the page. Some website editors remove script tags when a page is saved.
A page needs the script only once, however many widgets are on it. An extra copy does no harm.
WordPress
In the page editor, add a Custom HTML block where you want the widget.
Paste the code into the block.
Publish the page.
HubSpot CMS
In the page editor, add an embed or HTML module where you want the widget.
Paste the code into the module.
Publish the page.
SharePoint Online and intranet pages
SharePoint Online removes script tags from pages. The widget can't run there, or on most intranet platforms that block third-party scripts. If your platform blocks scripts, contact us and we'll look at the options with you.
Publish a testimonial
You'll need the Publish feedback permission. Owners, Admins and Managers have it by default.
Go to Feedback and find the response. To narrow the list, filter to positive sentiment or to one survey.
Click the megaphone icon next to the comment. Its tooltip reads "Publish this comment." The megaphone turns from gray to orange.
To unpublish a comment, click the orange megaphone again.
Every comment has its own megaphone. That includes follow-up comments and answers to a standalone comment question, as well as the comment that comes with a rating. On a response with several comments, you can publish any of them and leave the rest. Answers to choice questions can't be published or shown in a widget.
Choose which feedback a widget shows
Filters are in the Feedback filtering section of the widget's edit screen. A new testimonial widget already has the condition Published is true. Add more conditions to narrow what it shows.
A condition matches when its field has any of the values you pick, and a response has to match every condition. Conditions look at the response a comment belongs to. With Rating value is 5, a published follow-up comment appears only if its response was rated 5.
About | Fields |
The response | Published, Survey, Metric, Rating value, Sentiment, Tag, Source, Language, Ticket ID, IP address |
The customer | Customer, Company, Customer Tag, custom customer attributes |
Your team | Team member, Collaborator |
Matching feedback is ordered by the date the response came in, newest first. The date you published a comment doesn't change its place.
If you'd rather not publish comments one by one, remove the Published condition. The widget then shows every response that matches its other filters. Use Rating value or Sentiment to limit it to positive feedback, and Survey to exclude internal surveys.
Warning: Filters apply to all your existing feedback, not just new responses. Removing the Published condition can put years-old comments that nobody chose to publish on your website as soon as you click Save and publish. Check the preview before you save.
Edit a widget
Go to Admin → Feedback widgets.
Click the pencil icon on the widget's row.
Changes show in the preview as you make them and apply when you click Save and publish.
Setting | What it changes |
Survey | The survey a score widget uses |
Date range | The period a score widget covers |
Max feedback | How many testimonials the widget shows |
Icon | Stars, quote marks or emoji, and their color and size |
Customer name format | Full name, first name and last initial, initials, or hidden |
Company and date | Whether each one shows, and the date format |
Colors, borders, shadow and fonts | Background, border width and radius, text sizes and font |
Custom CSS | Your own style rules |
Feedback filtering | Which feedback the widget shows |
A preset is a ready-made set of style settings for the widget's type. Applying one leaves your Survey and Max feedback settings as they are.
To rename a widget, open the options menu next to Save and publish and choose Rename.
To delete a widget, click the trash icon on its row at Admin → Feedback widgets.
Heads up: Deleting a widget removes it from every page it's installed on.
Score widgets
A score widget shows one number from one survey.
For CSAT and CES, it's the percentage of positive responses.
For 5-star, it's the average rating, to one decimal place.
For NPS, it's your Net Promoter Score.
To make one, create a widget with the Score type, then choose its Survey and Date range. You can also edit the caption under the number.
The date range can be 7, 30, 90, 180 or 360 days, ending today. There's no all-time option. As the range moves forward each day, older responses drop out of the score. Conditions in Feedback filtering narrow which responses count.
To show the score through a QR code, install the score widget on a page and point the QR code at that page.
Style a widget with custom CSS
Custom CSS is available on Pro and above. Every plan has the built-in settings for colors, fonts, borders and icons.
On a plan without custom CSS, Save and publish stays disabled on a widget that has CSS rules until you remove them.
Add your rules in the Custom CSS section of the widget's edit screen. They load after the widget's own styles and apply only inside the widget.
Class | What it styles |
| The container for all the cards in Grid, Masonry and Carousel widgets |
| One card, or the score widget's box |
| A card's icon row |
| A card's comment text |
| A card's attribution line |
| The score widget's number and icon |
| The score widget's caption |
This rule makes the comment text larger on every card:
.testimonial .comment { font-size: 22px; }To find a selector that isn't in the table, right-click the widget on your website and inspect it.
A widget fills the width of the container you paste it into. To change its size, change that container. The border radius setting only rounds the corners.
Troubleshooting
The widget isn't appearing on the page
Check that both parts of the code, the link and the script, are still on the page.
A testimonial widget with nothing to show displays nothing. Make sure at least one published comment matches its filters. The preview on the widget's edit screen shows what the installed widget shows.
A score widget is blank when its survey has been archived. Choose an active survey.
SharePoint Online and intranets that block third-party scripts can't run the code. Contact us about the options.
The widget was working and has stopped
Check that the widget still exists at Admin → Feedback widgets. Someone may have deleted it. For a score widget, check that its survey hasn't been archived. If the widget exists, its preview looks right and the code on the page is intact, contact us with the page URL.
The widget shows old feedback
Old feedback shows when nothing newer matches the widget's filters. Publish some recent comments, or narrow the filters until the old ones no longer match, for example with a Tag or Survey condition. Unpublishing an old comment removes it from every widget, not just this one.
Two widgets show different numbers
Each score widget calculates from its own survey, date range and filters. Compare those settings on the two widgets. For the same number in two places, install the same widget in both.
New feedback isn't showing in the widget
Check that the comment is published (its megaphone is orange) and that the response matches the widget's filters, including Survey and Rating value. A response with no comment text never shows. Then reload the page the widget is on.
A settings change isn't showing on the site
Click Save and publish, then reload the page on your site. The installed code doesn't need to change.
FAQ
Can the score widget show how many reviews the score is based on?
No, it shows the score only. Custom CSS can add fixed text, but that text won't update as the count changes.
Can I filter a widget by date?
No. A testimonial widget shows the newest matching feedback, up to its Max feedback number. A score widget has its own Date range setting.
Can I put the same widget on more than one page?
Yes. Paste the same code on each page, and every copy shows the same content.
Do I need to update the code when I change a widget's settings?
No. Changes reach the installed widget the next time its page loads.
How do I show the score without the testimonials?
Create a widget with the Score type. For a score above a testimonial grid, put both widgets on the same page.
How do I get a customer's permission before publishing their feedback?
Tag each response where the customer agreed, and add a Tag condition with that tag to the widget. You can ask for permission in the survey itself with a multiple-choice question, but a yes doesn't add the tag automatically. You'll still need to tag those responses.
