File upload question type

Let respondents attach photos, screenshots, and documents to their survey answers.

Plan availability: ✓ Pro ✓ Elite ✓ Enterprise

What your customers can upload

  • Images — JPG, PNG, GIF, WebP

  • Documents — PDF, DOC, DOCX

  • Up to 4 files per question

  • Up to 10 MB per file

These limits are the same for every file upload question. You can't change them per question.

Add a file upload question

  1. Open your survey and go to the Build section.

  2. Click Add question.

  3. Pick File upload.

  4. Write your question text.

  5. Choose Required or Optional.

  6. Save and publish your survey

Note: If you make the question required, your customer can't submit the survey until at least one file finishes uploading. This is different from other question types, where typing or clicking is enough.

What respondents see

Your customer gets an upload box under the question text. They can click it to open their file picker, or drag a file onto it on a desktop.

A short line under the box lists the accepted file types, up to 10 MB, and max 4 files.

Uploading starts as soon as they pick a file, and each file shows its own progress. The box uses your survey branding and your translations, the same as every other question.

If a file is the wrong type or too big, they see this message:

File can't be uploaded. Use JPG, PNG, GIF, WebP, PDF, DOC, or DOCX. Max 10 MB, 4 files.

Let anonymous respondents upload files

This setting only matters for embed surveys — the generic embed and the web embed.

Go to the Configure tab of your survey and find Capture customer information from anonymous surveys.

  • On — anyone can upload, even when you don't know who they are.

  • Off — only respondents you can identify see the question. Anonymous respondents skip it and get a shorter survey. They never see a control that fails.

New surveys have this turned on. Surveys you created before file upload launched have it turned off. Turn it on for each survey that needs uploads.

Use file upload with follow-up questions

A file upload question can trigger a follow-up question. The rule is Triggers if any file is uploaded.

File upload can also be the follow-up itself. For example, ask for a photo after a low rating.

You can also show a file upload question with a Visibility rule, the same as any other question.
